Regarding participation in the Blessed Sacrament of Christ’s True Body and Blood: Because oneness at the altar presupposes oneness in faith and doctrine, we expect that all who commune at the Lord’s altar are members in good standing of an LCMS congregation. We ask that all who commune register on a communion card. All visitors should state their home LCMS congregation. First time visitors please speak to Pastor Dreyer. Individual cups for those desiring them are available as you approach the altar.

from the pastor Dear Members of Bingen, I arrived on my “mission trip” and all is well except the luggage did not make it, but we as Christians always live in anticipation of good things to come. We do have some exciting and new things coming up. The Sunday after my return (August 16) we will witness two adults being confirmed and possibly a baptism.
The following Wednesday we will have two more adults being confirmed at the Divine Service on August 19. A new adult catechesis class will start up Tuesday, August 18, with approximately five more adult catechumen. If you are aware of anyone who desires to go through adult catechism, please have them call me or register with our secretary Dawn.
On Sunday, August 23, we will begin using Divine Service 4 on page 203 of your hymnal. You might want to take a look at it before that Sunday. I think you will like the Service but keep in mind, the one you grew up with will be treated as the chief service at Bingen. It is just healthy for Bingen to be familiar with the various liturgies.
Since it appears to be a great hit, we will most likely continue on with the Wednesday night Bible class that follows the Divine Service. I am interested down the road to make Wednesday nights a family night at Bingen like many of our churches do in Fort Wayne and my church growing up.
The first Monday (August 17) after I return, we will have a Social Committee Meeting in order to plan for different activities at Bingen. This has been a request from a number of people at St. John and just a good idea to plan occasional activities that young and old can participate. There are a lot of things other congregations have done that do not require much effort. The meeting starts at 6:00 pm and ends at 8:00 pm so you if want to come late or leave early, no problem, we will love to hear your ideas. Young and old are invited to this meeting.
Finally, please continue to visit our church’s website (www.stjohnbingen.com) and our blog (www.stjohnlutheranbingen.blogspot.com) I will continue to post things on the blog even during my “mission trip.”
Finally, each day I make account of how blessed I am to serve such a wonderful congregation as Bingen. I frequently tell others not only Bingen’s rich history and tradition but also of her faithfulness and integrity to the faith and life we have received in Christ Jesus. I especially think of these things while I am away. Please keep me and my service to you in your prayers and I assure you Bingen is always part of my daily prayers.
Peace in Christ!

John 6:35-51 |
“Jesus: Life-giving Bread” |
Jesus is the Bread of Life. He came down from heaven to accomplish the Father’s will of reuniting you to Him. So the Father seeks to draw you to Jesus, fill you with Jesus, that your whole being--soul and body--may finally be made whole and raised to life everlasting. In Jesus, even now, you have this eternal life. |

“Powerless” |
When confronted with challenging teachings the disciples “grumbled about this”. Many “no longer walked with Him”. They were offended by the Gospel. They were powerless to save themselves. |

“Who's in Charge Here?” |
Authority is a critical issue in all human relationships. In Christian relationships, Christ is in charge, and we honor Him by serving each other in love. |

“More than Doing Good” |
Have you been good lately? We try to do good and not the bad. But righteousness before God comes by more than doing good. It comes by faith in Jesus Christ! |
Rev. James Elsner Hudson, IN |
1Have mercy on me, O God,
according to your | steadfast love;
according to your abundant mercy blot out my trans- | gressions.
2Wash me thoroughly from my in- |
iquity,
and cleanse me | from my sin!
3For
I know my trans- | gressions,
and my sin is ever be- | fore me.
4Against
you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil | in your sight,
so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your |
judgment.
5Behold,
I was brought forth in in- | iquity,
and in sin did my mother con- | ceive me.
6Behold,
you delight in truth in the inward | being,
and you teach me wisdom in the | secret heart.
7Purge
me with hyssop, and I | shall be clean;
wash me, and I shall be whit- | er than snow.
8Let
me hear joy and | gladness;
let the bones that you have bro- | ken rejoice.
9Hide
your face | from my sins,
and blot out all my in- | iquities.
10Create
in me a clean heart, O God,
and renew a right spirit with- | in me.
11Cast
me not away from your | presence,
and take not your Holy Spirit | from me.
12Restore
to me the joy of your sal- | vation,
and uphold me with a willing | spirit.
The Ninth Sunday after Trinity
The Old Testament + 2 Samuel 22:26-34
With the merciful you show yourself merciful; with the blameless man you show yourself blameless; with the purified you deal purely, and with the crooked you make yourself seem tortuous. You save a humble people, but your eyes are on the haughty to bring them down. For you are my lamp, O LORD, and my God lightens my darkness. For by you I can run against a troop, and by my God I can leap over a wall. This God—his way is perfect; the word of the LORD proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him. “For who is God, but the LORD? And who is a rock, except our God? This God is my strong refuge and has made my way blameless. He made my feet like the feet of a deer and set me secure on the heights.
The Epistle + 1 Corinthians 10:6-13
Now these things took place as examples for us, that we might not desire evil as they did. Do not be idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.” We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in a single day. We must not put Christ to the test, as some of them did and were destroyed by serpents, nor grumble, as some of them did and were destroyed by the Destroyer. Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come. Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
The Holy Gospel + Luke 16:1-9
He also said to the disciples, “There was a rich man who had a manager, and charges were brought to him that this man was wasting his possessions. And he called him and said to him, ‘What is this that I hear about you? Turn in the account of your management, for you can no longer be manager.’ And the manager said to himself, ‘What shall I do, since my master is taking the management away from me? I am not strong enough to dig, and I am ashamed to beg. I have decided what to do, so that when I am removed from management, people may receive me into their houses.’ So, summoning his master’s debtors one by one, he said to the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ He said, ‘A hundred measures of oil.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bill, and sit down quickly and write fifty.’ Then he said to another, ‘And how much do you owe?’ He said, ‘A hundred measures of wheat.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bill, and write eighty.’ The master commended the dishonest manager for his shrewdness. For the sons of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than the sons of light. And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of unrighteous wealth, so that when it fails they may receive you into the eternal dwellings.”
