Regarding participation in the Blessed Sacrament of Christ’s True Body and Blood: Because oneness at the altar presupposes oneness in faith and doctrine, we expect that all who commune at the Lord’s altar are members in good standing of an LCMS congregation. We ask that all who commune register on a communion card. All visitors should state their home LCMS congregation. First time visitors please speak to Pastor Dreyer. Individual cups for those desiring them are available as you approach the altar.

READINGS FOR TODAY   Isaiah 29:17-24, 2 Corinthians 3:4-11 and Mark 7:31-37 (lectionary readings can be found in the front of the hymnal on page Lectionaries xxi)

from the pastor Dear members of Bingen,

There are three books that I had bought lately. The first book I do not use for inspiration of any sort, it is called, “Loneliness” by John T. Cacioppo and William Patrick. It appears to be a good book. We live in a day when loneliness is huge, bigger than you can imagine. Loneliness is worst than suffering or any other feeling on earth in my pastoral opinion. It is also what the devil wants, he wants us to believe that we are separated from the flock, that we are alone, alone in our struggles in life and the devil wishes us not to live together under the Gospel that unites us as one family in Christ in one faith, one hope and one baptism.

As much as we are attracted to other activities in life, we should continue to emphasize that we are family at St. John’s, united in the same blood, namely, Christ’s blood; therefore we are blood brothers and sisters in Christ. Therefore gathering at the Divine Service, in Word and Sacrament is very important because it is the place where God continues to unite us in His grace and truth. Secondly, we should ask the question, how much interaction do we have outside the service as “family”? This is where we have efforts to offer more activities for our members of our Church. If we lose this interaction we will not only begin to lose our youth but also more importantly, we may lose our “community” in our own individual lives and lose the very nature of what it means to live in “community” with one another as Christians that share the same life under the Gospel. So, please be aware of the various social activities that are planned for our Church and please consider attending. These events include both young and old.

The second book on my reading shelf is called, “Hippie,” by Barry Miles. Yes, remember the hippies? I believe that in the 60’s and 70’s that there was a huge shift in the American culture. There were very good points that came from this generation but also a time where the social structure of our country began to break down. During this time we saw the break down of the smallest unit of society, namely family. This break down also includes traditional values and education which are replaced with individualism, deviant lifestyles and self gratification. Christianity, as I see it, is becoming a secular religion in the United States and in the world.

Finally, the last book on my list is called, “The Words We Live By,” by Linda R. Monk. It is an annotated guide to the Constitution of the United States. It is a very good book that reminds us that it is important that we should seek to preserve our freedoms or liberties in our country. Our country is beginning to interfere with our religious freedom for a number of reasons; therefore it sparks my interest that we preserve our freedom in our country.

Peace in Christ,

Pr. Dreyer

“More than Doing Good”

Have you been good lately? We try to do good and not the bad. But righteousness before God comes by more than doing good. It comes by faith in Jesus Christ!

Mark 7:31-37

“Loosened Tongues”

Touched by God’s love, we often keep quiet about it, but the Spirit and Jesus enables us to speak and share the good news of Jesus.

Mark 9:24

“Help My Unbelief”

We as Christians believe in Jesus. This belief frequently involves both knowledge and trust. At times our faith is eroded, attacked, or challenged by the cares, problems, and philosophies of this world. We pray with the man in our text, “Lord I believe, help my unbelief.”

James 4:7

“Resist the Devil”

We are to resist the devil, and he will flee from us, because:

      I.) We have Christ

     II.) We have the Word of God

Psalm 146 antiphon 8 (English Standard Version)

 1Praise | the LORD!
  Praise the LORD, | O my soul!

 2I will praise the LORD as long | as I live;
  I will sing praises to my God while I have my | being.

 3Put not your trust in | princes,
  in a son of man, in whom there is no sal- | vation.

 4When his breath departs, he returns | to the earth;
  on that very day his plans | perish.

 5Blessed is he whose help is the God of | Jacob,
  whose hope is in the | LORD his God,

 6who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is | in them,
  who keeps faith for- | ever;

 7who executes justice for | the oppressed,
  who gives food to the | hungry.

  The LORD sets the prisoners free; the LORD opens the eyes | of the blind.
  The LORD lifts up those who are bowed down; the LORD loves the | righteous.

 9The LORD watches over the sojourners; he upholds the widow and the | fatherless,
  but the way of the wicked he brings to | ruin.

10The LORD will reign for- | ever,
  your God, O Zion, to all generations. | Praise the LORD!

The Twelfth Sunday after Trinity

The Old Testament  +  Isaiah 29:17-24

Is it not yet a very little while until Lebanon shall be turned into a fruitful field, and the fruitful field shall be regarded as a forest? In that day the deaf shall hear the words of a book, and out of their gloom and darkness the eyes of the blind shall see. The meek shall obtain fresh joy in the LORD, and the poor among mankind shall exult in the Holy One of Israel. For the ruthless shall come to nothing and the scoffer cease, and all who watch to do evil shall be cut off, who by a word make a man out to be an offender, and lay a snare for him who reproves in the gate, and with an empty plea turn aside him who is in the right. Therefore thus says the LORD, who redeemed Abraham, concerning the house of Jacob: “Jacob shall no more be ashamed, no more shall his face grow pale. For when he sees his children, the work of my hands, in his midst, they will sanctify my name; they will sanctify the Holy One of Jacob and will stand in awe of the God of Israel. And those who go astray in spirit will come to understanding, and those who murmur will accept instruction.”

The Epistle  +  2 Corinthians 3:4-11

Such is the confidence that we have through Christ toward God. Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God, who has made us competent to be ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. Now if the ministry of death, carved in letters on stone, came with such glory that the Israelites could not gaze at Moses’ face because of its glory, which was being brought to an end, will not the ministry of the Spirit have even more glory? For if there was glory in the ministry of condemnation, the ministry of righteousness must far exceed it in glory. Indeed, in this case, what once had glory has come to have no glory at all, because of the glory that surpasses it. For if what was being brought to an end came with glory, much more will what is permanent have glory.

The Holy Gospel  +  Mark 7:31-37

Then he returned from the region of Tyre and went through Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, in the region of the Decapolis. And they brought to him a man who was deaf and had a speech impediment, and they begged him to lay his hand on him. And taking him aside from the crowd privately, he put his fingers into his ears, and after spitting touched his tongue. And looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to him, “Ephphatha,” that is, “Be opened.” And his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly. And Jesus charged them to tell no one. But the more he charged them, the more zealously they proclaimed it. And they were astonished beyond measure, saying, “He has done all things well. He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”
