Angels from the Realms of Glory LSB
367
Please stand and turn to face the Processional Cross as it enters the Church.
1. Angels from the realms of glory,
Wing your flight o'er all the earth;
Ye who sang creation's story,
Now proclaim Messiah's birth:
Refrain:
Come and worship, Come and worship; Worship Christ, the newborn King.
2. Shepherds in the fields abiding,
Watching o'er your flocks by night,
God with us is now residing,
Yonder shines the Infant Light: Refrain
3. Sages, leave your contemplations,
Brighter visions beam afar;
Seek the great Desire of nations;
Ye have seen His natal star: Refrain
4. Saints before the altar bending,
Watching long in hope and fear,
Suddenly the Lord, descending,
In His Temple shall appear: Refrain
5. All creation, join in praising
God the Father, Spirit, Son,
Evermore your voices raising
To the eternal Three in One. Refrain
The Invocation
P: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
The Introit
Psalm 96;
Antiphon: Liturgical Text
P: When all was still,
and it was midnight, Your almighty Word, O Lord,
descended from the royal throne.
C: Oh sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth!
P: Sing to the Lord, bless His name; tell of His salvation from day to day.
C: Declare His glory among the nations, His marvelous works among all the peoples!
P: For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; He is to be feared above all gods.
C: Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; let the sea roar, and all that fills it;
P: Let the field exult, and everything in it. Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for joy before the Lord, for he comes, for he comes to judge the earth.
All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.
P: When all was still, and it was midnight, Your almighty Word, O Lord, descended from the royal throne.
The Hymn of Praise
Having omitted the Hymn of Praise during Advent according to ancient church tradition, we now join with the angels in their Hymn of Praise to the newborn Savior.
(tune: "Hark the Herald, Angels Sing")
"Glory be to God on high!"
This is now our joyful cry.
Peace to all who live on earth,
Grace and favor for new birth.
You we praise and glorify;
Worship You, O Lord most high.
Gracious Father, heav'nly King,
To Your name alone we sing:
Praise the glory of Your name,
Now and evermore the same!
Jesus Christ, the Father's Son,
Sole-begotten, holy One,
Born on earth from realms on high,
Bom true man for us to die.
Lamb of God, You take away
This world's sin. Grant peace, we pray.
With the Spirit, You alone,
Are most high, O God the Son,
And the Father, God above;
Praise we now Your glorious love.
The Salutation and Collect for the Day
P: The Lord be with you.
C: And with thy spirit.
P: Let us pray. O God, You make this most holy night to shine with the brightness of the true Light. Grant that as we have known the mysteries of that Light on earth we may also come to the fullness of His joys in heaven; through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C: Amen

The Old Testament Reading Isaiah 9:2-7
The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shined. You have multiplied the nation; you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as they are glad when they divide the spoil. For the yoke of his burden, and the staff for his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian. For every boot of the trampling warrior in battle tumult and every garment rolled in blood will be burned as fuel for the fire. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
P: This is the Word of the Lord.
C: Thanks be to God.
The Hymn Response O Little Town of Bethlehem LSB 361
1. O little town of Bethlehem,
How still we see thee lie!
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep
The silent stars go by;
Yet in thy dark streets shineth
The everlasting light.
The hopes and fears of all the years
Are met in thee tonight.
2. For Christ is born of Mary,
And gathered all above,
While mortals sleep, the angels keep
Their watch of wondering love.
O morning stars together,
Proclaim the holy birth,
And praises sing to God the King,
And peace to all the earth!
The Epistle Reading 1 John 4:7-16
Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.
By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.
P: This is the Word of the Lord.
C: Thanks be to God.
The Hymn Response O Little Town of Bethlehem LSB 361
3. How silently, how silently,
The wondrous Gift is giv'n;
So God imparts to human hearts
The blessings of His heav'n.
No ear may hear His coming,
But in this world of sin,
Where meek souls will receive Him still,
The dear Christ enters in.
4. O holy child of Bethlehem,
Descend to us, we pray;
Cast out our sin and enter in,
Be born in us today.
We hear the Christmas angels
The great glad tidings tell:
Oh, come to us, abide with us,
Our Lord Immanuel!
Please stand and turn to face the processional cross.
The Christmas Gospel Matthew 1:18-25
The Christmas Gospel is read from the middle of the congregation as a visible reminder that "the Word became flesh and dwelt among us."
C: Glory be to Thee, O Lord.
Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:
"Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel" (which means, God with us). When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.
P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C: Praise be to Thee, O Christ.
The Nicene Creed
I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.
And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the Prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life + of the world to come. Amen.

The Sermon Hymn It Came Upon the Midnight Clear LSB 366
1. It came upon the midnight clear,
That glorious song of old,
From angels bending near the earth
To touch their harps of gold:
"Peace on the earth, goodwill
towards men,
From heav'n's all gracious King."
The world in solemn stillness lay
To hear the angels sing.
2. Still through the cloven skies they come
With peaceful wings unfurled,
And still their heav'nly music floats
O'er all the weary world.
Above its sad and lowly plains
They bend on hov'ring wing,
And ever o'er its babel sounds
The blessed angels sing.
3. All you, beneath your heavy load,
By care and guilt bent low,
Who toil along a dreary way
With painful steps and slow:
Look up, for golden is the hour,
Come swiftly on the wing,
The Prince was born to bring you peace;
Of Him the angels sing.
4. For lo, the days have come to pass
By prophets seen of old,
When down into the circling years
Came Christ as was foretold.
His word of peace shall to the earth
God's ancient promise bring,
And all who take this gift will hear
The song the angels sing.

Angels We Have Heard on High LSB 368

Sweetly singing o'er the plains,
And the mountains in reply,
Echoing their joyous strains.

Gloria in excelsis Deo.
2. Shepherds, why this jubilee?
Why your joyous strains prolong?
What the gladsome tidings be
Which inspire your heav'nly song?

Him whose birth the angels sing;
Come, adore on bended knee
Christ the Lord, the newborn king.

That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear.
Refrain:

Shall come to thee, O Israel!
2. Oh come, Thou Wisdom from on high,
Who ord'rest all things mightily;
To us the path of knowledge show,
And teach us in her ways to go. Refrain
3. Oh come, oh come, our Lord of might,
Who to Thy tribes on Sinai's height
In ancient times didst give the Law,
In cloud and majesty and awe.

Free them from Satan's tyranny
That trust Your mighty pow'r to save;

Choir "O Jesus Christ Thy Manger Is"
Once in Royal David's City LSB 376
1. Once in royal David's city
Stood a lowly cattle shed,
Where a mother laid her baby
In a manger for His bed;
Mary was that mother mild,
Jesus Christ her little child.
2. He came down to earth from heaven
Who is God and Lord of all,
And His shelter was a stable,
And His cradle was a stall;
With the poor and mean and lowly
Lived on earth our Savior holy.
3. For He is our childhood's pattern,
Day by day like us He grew;
He was little, weak, and helpless,
Tears and smiles like us He knew;
And He feels for all our sadness,
And He shares in all our gladness.
4. And our eyes at last shall see Him
Through His own redeeming love,
For that child so dear and gentle
Is our Lord in heav'n above,
As He leads His children on
To the place where He is gone.
5. Not in that poor lowly stable
With the oxen standing by
Shall we see Him, but in heaven,
Set at God's right hand on high.
Then like stars His children, crowned,
All in white, His praise will sound!

Nor thorns infest the ground;
He comes to make His blessing flow
Far as the curse is found,
Far as the curse is found,
Far as, far as the curse is found.

And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness
And wonders of His love,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders, wonders of His love.

Sermon Outline
Christmas Eve Candlelight
"In This Is Love"
Text: Matthew 1:18-25
I. Luke's Christmas Story—How Christmas is celebrated in heaven
In this is love, that God sent His Son, and the very heavens sang.
II. Matthew's Christmas Story—Closer to the heart of Christianity on earth.
In this is love, not that you have loved God, but that God sent His Son into a world of death, that we might live.
III. Because of Matthew's story, we can, with Luke and the angels, celebrate Christmas with heaven.
In this man, Jesus Christ, is love—God's love for you.
