Prayer before Worship

O God, because You once caused this holy night to shine with the brightness of the true Light, grant that we who have known the mystery of that Light here on earth may come to the full measure of its joys in heaven; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Theme

“The Quempas goes ’round” is the expression that has been used for several hundred years to describe Quempas singing, a delightful custom that dates back to the Middle Ages. The name Quempas comes from the first two words of the carol in the original Latin language: “Quem pastores.”

Though it can be performed in a variety of arrangements, much symbolism is involved in the celebration of Quempas. The light of the candles reminds us of the Light of the world, Christ our Savior. Carrying the light to the four corners of the church can remind us of our privilege and responsibility to carry God’s redeeming message to the “four corners of the earth.” The passing of the “song” from congregation to choirs can remind us of the support we give one another in the body of Christ as we go about the task of being His messengers. The emphatic refrain, sung by all, reminds us of the oneness we have in Christ. Our celebration of the Quempas Carol is interspersed with the reading of the Christmas story from the Gospel of Luke and the singing of familiar Christmas carols.

In many churches, the Quempas constituted the principal item of carol singing on Christmas Eve; in fact, the service was not considered complete without the singing of the Quempas. The refrain of the Quempas Carol—“God’s own Son is born a child; God the Father is reconciled!”—is drawn from another very old carol: “Resonet in Laudibus.” The antiphon for tonight’s psalm is based on the melody of “Resonet in Laudibus,” indicating that the Psalms point us to Christ and His incarnation.

The Evening Canticle used in this service, known as the Phos Hilaron, is one of the oldest Christian hymns, dating from around AD 200.  Only one other extra-biblical hymn is older (“Shepherd of Tender Youth”).  The Phos Hilaron (Greek for “Joyous Light”) has been used during the lighting of lamps at the evening service for centuries.

A Note Regarding Photographs

Because this church service is not a mere program or performance but an opportunity to worship, we kindly ask that you refrain from taking photographs or video during the service. You are invited to take photographs after the service.

  1.  Oh, come, all ye faithful,

      Joyful and triumphant!

      Oh, come ye, oh, come ye to Bethlehem;

      Come and behold him

      Born the king of angels:

      Refrain:

Oh, come, let us adore him,

Oh, come, let us adore him,

Oh, come, let us adore him,

      Christ the Lord!

      2.  Highest, most holy,

           Light of light eternal,

           Born of a virgin, a mortal he comes;

           Son of the Father

           Now in flesh appearing!   Refrain

      3.  Sing, choirs of angels,

           Sing in exultation,

Sing, all ye citizens of heaven above!

           Glory to God

           In the highest:   Refrain

Service of Light

P.      The people walking in darkness have seen a great light.

C.     The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.

P.      On those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.

C.     We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son who          came from the Father.

P.      For to us a child is born, to us a Son is given.

C.     In him was life, and that life was the light of men.

Evening Canticle

"Jesus, Joyous Light of Glory"

Phos Hilaron

Jesus, joyous light of glory,

      Holy and blest,

Son of the immortal Father,

      Highest and best:

Now while day to night surrenders,

   In the sunset’s fading splendor,

Songs of praise to You we render—

      Lord, be our rest.

Christ, of all life’s good the Giver,

      With one accord

You are worthy, now and ever,

      To be adored;

So the world its glory bringing,

   Joins celestial voices ringing:

   Father, Son, and Spirit singing—

      “One holy Lord!”

Prayer

P.   We praise and thank You, O God, through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, that You have enlightened us by revealing the Light that never fades. Night is falling, and day’s allotted span draws to a close. The daylight which You created for our pleasure has fully satisfied us, and yet, of Your free gift, now the evening lights do not fail us. We praise You and glorify You through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord; through Him be glory, honor, and power to You in the Holy Spirit now and always and forever and ever.

C.  Amen.

Quempas Carol

Introduction                                                                                   Pastor

Reading                               Luke 2:1–5

Carol                              In a Little Stable             Preschool/Kindergarten

Children sing.

In a little stable

Far across the sea

Was a little Baby

Just like you and me.

Not a bed or cradle,

Not a pillow deep.

But a lowly manger

Was His place to sleep.

Shepherds stood around Him,

Angels watched with care,

For the Babe was Jesus,

Lying, smiling there.

Oh, I love this Jesus,

Who was little then,

For I know He loves me,

Little though I am.

Reading                               Luke 2:6–7

Carol                            Away in a Manger           Preschool/Kindergarten

Children sing.

Away in a manger, no crib for a bed,

The little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head.

The stars in the sky looked down where He lay,

The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.

The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes,

But little Lord Jesus, no crying He makes.

I love Thee, Lord Jesus! Look down from the sky,

And stay by my cradle ’til morning is nigh.

Benear me, Lord Jesus; I ask Thee to stay

Close by me forever and love me, I pray.

Bless all the dear children in Thy tender care,

And take us to heaven to live with Thee there.

Reading                              Luke 2:8–11

5th–8th grade children sing.

He whom shepherds once came praising,

Awed by heav’nly light ablazing,

Cheered by angel news amazing:

“King of glory, Christ is born!”

The glorious angels came today,

Aglow with light into the night of darkness deep,

To shepherds who by moon’s bright ray

Did in the field o’er sheep their silent vigil keep.

“Joy, great joy and tidings glad we bring from heav’n resounding,

For you, for you and all the world abounding.”

Carol                                  Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming                              LSB 359

1.  Lo, how a rose e'er blooming

       From tender stem hath sprung!

     Of Jesse's lineage coming

                                 As prophets long have sung,

     It came, a flow'ret bright,

       Amid the cold of winter,

     When half-spent was the night.

2.   Isaiah 'twas foretold it,

        The rose I have in mind;

     With Mary we behold it,

        The virgin mother kind.

     To show God's love aright,

She bore to us a Savior,

     When half-spent was the night.

3.  This flow'r, whose fragrance tender

       With sweetness fills the air,

     Dispels with glorious splendor

       The darkness ev'ry-where.

     True man, yet very God,

From sin and death He saves us

     And lightens ev'ry load.

4.  O Savior, child of Mary,

       Who felt our human woe;

     O Savior, King of glory,

       Who dost our weakness know:

Bring us at length we pray

To the bright courts of heaven,

O God, from whom come all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works, give to us,        Your servants, that peace which the world cannot give, that our hearts may be set to obey Your commandments       and also that we, being defended from the fear of our enemies, may live in peace and quietness; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our            Lord, who lives and reigns    with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
